What I've done in the case of bad gas springs like that is to get a
piece of PVC sprinkler pipe that slips easily over the cylinder. Cut it
to the right length to hold the lid up when slid down over the rod
portion. Slip it over the rod and reassemble everything. To lower the
lid, just slide the cylinder end into the pipe.
