I've never had a problem with the schedule 40 pipe, but can see your 
concern.  Perhaps aluminum tubing would be another choice as long as it 
doesn't rattle with the bass.

I would caution against using vice-grips as a preventive measure if the 
gas spring isn't already dead.  The pliers will gouge the piston which 
is likely to tear up the seals and cause early failure.
