Rick, all Wurlitzers that use a latch solenoid has a voltage reducing circuit that reduce the source voltage to a safe level that will hold the coil in after it makes its full stroke. If this circuit is defeated, the coil will smoke in minutes.
A juke box operating in its legitimate environment has no problem with this because a customer will use all his credits of the coin he has deposited. This is just another example that the purpose of coin operated equipment being adulterated. Wes

Subject: [Jukebox-list] wurlitzer 3600 superstar story & questions

contacted by a lady who owns a 3600, story goes like this... was playing fine. She was establishing credits by sliding the switch on the control center inside the cabinet, select light came on. played a few songs, then left juke on for a few hours with credits on machine. Came back later and smelled something burned and machine would not select play etc. She called a "pinball" guy who came out and said "the coil is burned" and he replaced the burned latch coil with a "Blue" pinball coil. Worked for a few minutes then the pinball guy said uh-oh it's not going to work because it's getting hot again, supposedly it cooked the replacement coil. I went yesterday to find that yes you can make the credit light come on but no selections can be made. I further discovered that the hacked wiring from the blue coil is just hanging there un-terminated. There is no service manual (which i suggested she purchase soon) so i am unsure as to where to solder the correct replacement coil that im looking to obtain. Can any Wurli 3600 owners tell me what the correct coil is (part number?) and to where it terminates? Also when the credit switch on the control center is moved, shouldn't i be hearing a relay clicking? I'm wondering if the pinball guy caused more damage than just the latch coil? Also did the original coil burn because it was left energized for too long?

Thanks

Rick
