Karl, regardless of the make, ALL dual steppers are a temporary
depository of impulse pulses to be used later. This only applies to
multi-plexed systems. Early simple steppers that were used on the 20-24
selection boxes do not need to hold the information for any longer than the
single pulse train requires. No so on multi-plexed systems. There are two
pulse trains, one for numbers and one for letters. The first stepper may
receive either number or letter pulses, depending on the manufacturer.
Regardless this information must be stored until the other train is
received. When both trains are finished, now is the time to use them to
register a selection. With the exception of AMI and Rowe, this is a straight
forward operation that simply pulses the memory. With AMI and Rowe, this
information is fed into the search system that commences to hunt for the
proper orientation of mechanical components to 'push a pin'.
I would recommend you hone up on remote systems. Wes
