[Jukebox-list] AMI TI-1 amp rebuild

Jack,
I don't know that amp, but generally speaking, you can use the smaller (new) caps to replace the cans. Cans have multiple value units inside the can--hence the additional terminals. The different values are usually marked both on the side of the can, and at the post of the can. The schematic will usually call out all of the caps inside one can as one number, with a suffix letter showing the different values (Example--schematic calls out "C-5100A" as 300/50 volts, and "C5100B", as 20/25volts). They use symbols such as a "square", "triangle" and or "half circle" to mark the values. Look at the side of the cans and find the symbols--if there is only one value in the can, it will not be marked. The other thing that you must watch out for when doing this, is polarity. Some amp designs call for a neg ground, while others need a positive ground. Sometimes a can cap is mounted to metal--this is usually a neg ground type. Other times the cap will be mounted on an "insulated"
mounting pad. This is usually (but not always) an indication of a positive ground circuit. Be sure the replacements reflect this difference. In all cases, you may use any ground post that is connected directly to the chassis metal as the ground terminal for the new cap--but if it's a positive ground circuit, you need to connect the positive side of the new cap to it. You may NOT use any terminal that comes from the "center of the can" as a new point of connection.
  Hope that helps, Ron Rich

I am in the process of rebuilding the amp of my TI-1. All bad resistors and diodes have been replaced and am currently replacing the caps from a kit that I got from Vern Tisdale. (Thanks Vern for lableing each cap per the schematic.) Replacing the caps is pretty straight forward except when it comes to the "can" type filter caps. I would like to leave the old "cans" in place for appearance purposes and install the new caps below the chassis. The problem is that there are other terminals besides the caps pos. and neg. leads attached to the existing caps that I am unsure what to do with. They don't seem to appear on the schematic.

Can I attach the new caps to the existing terminals or should I install new terminal strips and move the pos. and neg. leads to these strips? If so will the other attachment points have to be moved as well?

As you can tell from the above question, I am a rank rookie in this endeavor. Any help offered will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Jack
