I warned that this was a religious issue... :-)
I think that if you avoid the use of those things generally regarded as
"bad" such as WD-40 and regular 3-in-1 household oil, you will be fine
for a very long time in household use.
I personally have had no problems with the Zoom-Spout brand of sewing
machine oil. Note that Zoom-Spout seems to refer to the container and
not the oil inside. Their sewing machine oil is almost clear, whereas
their general use oil is yellow and quite a different product. Sewing
machines are rather similar to jukeboxes from a mechanical perspective,
a collection of cams and sliding and rolling mechanical parts driven by
an electric motor. In household service they are used infrequently and
in commercial use almost continuously.
Someone on the list acquired a supply of the oil formulation used by
Seeburg back in the day. This may be ideal, but on the other hand there
have been advances in chemistry and failure analysis since this was
formulated.
The bottom line is that the machine be cleaned and lubricated. Cleaned
is important, to remove the crud that has accumulated and formed from
the old lubrication. Lubricated to prevent wear and binding. Exactly
what lubrication can be a matter of personal preference but something
will be better than nothing and any reasonably intelligent choice will
work for a relatively long time.
