Before you give up, have you checked the fusees and the volume control?
Usually an amplifier will go dead in one channel first unless it's the power 
supply or another problem.

Turn the machine on and see if you can hear a faint hissing from the upper 
speakers.  If so, you might want to be sure you don't have another problem, 
like a sticky mute relay or something.
