If you can even find them nowadays, bamboo needles are
pretty expensive, although I heard at one point someone
was making new ones.  They have to be sharpened after
every play, in a device sort of like a cigar cutter, and
so of course they get shorter with every play.  They
do give a pleasant soft tone on accoustic machines, but
they're high-maintenance.  In Britain, thorn needles 
were popular for the same reasons - but you can't sharpen
them.  Dispose after one play, like steel needles.
