Jim, Chris and Bob,

Thank you for the help!  I don't know where I got
1488!  It is a 1484.  

The shaft the knob goes on is small to me.  About
3/16" diameter.  It has two raised bumps that are 180
degrees apart to prevent the knob from slipping.  It
never occurred to me that it was a plastic knob.  I
bet the operators had a few words to say about that! 
I will keep an eye out for the Tempo parts; but I
certainly like the lever idea.  Perhaps a nice chrome
lever with a set screw would do the trick; originality
sounds impossible to duplicate here at a realistic
cost...   Thanks again everyone!
