Hi David,

These high voltage diodes are interesting.
The 80/5Y3 is a xenotron, a vacuum diode. It only its filament glows..... 
normally.
The 83/5Z3 is a phanotron, a gas-filled thermionic diode. The gas does glow 
bluish in colour.
