Okay, the "scan switch". 
I removed t he amp. I manually changed the direction of the mech and got it to start cycling again. It picked up all the records I had selected. I put the amp back in. Everything is performnig as it should. All's well... I must've installed something wrong the first  time out. 
ANYway, the thing now sounds amazing... FINALLY. What a trip this has been.
