[Jukebox-list] Wow and Flutter Sound in Seeburg G

Ron,
Thanks for your prompt reply. I'm at work now, so I can't give all the answers to your questions, but I'll try for some:
The motor coupling was new from Victory Glass. I'm not sure what you mean by "changed the coupling correctly". Is there a specific way it goes in? It does not appear to wobble or vibrate, and I re-installed it like the original.
I did not change the motor support because they appeared ok. Perhaps this is something else I can try.
I'll have to check on the brand of motor... Did some have a defect or are more prone to this behaviour?
I was not aware that the motor should be disassembled and cleaned out. What is it that I'm to clean, the bearings (and brushes)?
For lubrication I used 20 SAE oil.
No, I did not know about checking the thrust bearings to specs. I'll check the manuals for this.
I'll check the clutch mounting screws too.
Yes, the motor cap certainly appears original to me (the solder connections look dull, and untouched). Is it a good idea to change the cap just due to age?
Thanks for your help with this, it is most appreciated.
Mike

Mike,
You have just about hit it all except you don't say if the motor coupling is new, or if you changed the motor coupling correctly, or the motor supports, and motor support plug are good. You also don't say which brand motor is in it, or if you dis-assembled and cleaned it. You also mention lubrication--but you don't say what you used. You do not say if you have checked and re-adjusted all of the thrust bearings, to specs. Also check that the clutch mounting screws are tight.
As for the motor cap, you don't say if it is an original, or possibly the wrong replacement. You should check to be sure that the cap add contacts are (electrically) open when in play.
I would assume from your description that the TT "mounts" are OK.

Hi,
I've got a Seeburg G (with a C mech) that's had a problem with the sound since I bought it in 1990. The problem is best described as "wow and flutter". It is most noticable on sustained notes, such as a piano passage, and affects all records equally. To me it clearly sounds like a mechanical (as opposed to amplifier issue... the amp has been fully recapped).
I have changed the motor coupling, lubricated all moving parts, and checked the motor rubber mounts (no improvement).
I'm not certain if the turntable mounts have been changed or not. There is some slight flexing of the turntable, but it is not sloppy or loose.
The only other thing I can think of is the motor capacitor, as it is original (would this cause the problem?)
Other than this sound issue, the box works great.
Can anyone give me some suggestions as to what might be causing this warbly type sound?
Thanks a lot,
Mike
