Sorry to hear that, Ian.  I try to put things out of the way, because, 
careful as I am (very), I've stepped on a couple things over the years 
myself.  I think we all have.

It's too easy to take something off and just put it aside because you're 
inspired and excited.  30 seconds later, you've already forgotten, go for a 
tool, and can clobber an easy to break part.

No excuse when it's someone who, seeing something disassembled and being 
worked on, should out of courtesy and common sense, give a wide berth.

If it's any consolation, I have an AMI MM5 that's been running without the 
cover for decades and it's fine.  It's not in a smokey bar or greasy 
restaurant to get gunked up, so it's clean as a whistle.
I looked for one for a while, but none of the usual suspects had one.
