Ian, four or six 1/4 inch nutdriver screws are all that hold the 2 lock 
latches on.
Simply remove them.
The whole process would have taken less than 2 minutes to disable the 
latches in this manner.
Ta-da! No need for a key.

Best to always have the key. Next time it gets lost, immediately order 
another.  Any good locksmith can make a National brand key with nothing more 
than the number on the front of the lock.
