Thanks for your help and tips guys!

Today we took out, disassembled and cleaned most of the gripper mechanism. We 
used acetone and some kind of "metal cleaner" which got the dirt and (mainly) 
oxide from the aliminium parts - some look nearly like new :)
Now we only need the right kind of grease and we can put it back together.

Next we want to take out and clean the basket.
