...and I suppose the weight and fragility of 78s doesn't help.  The 45s are 
so much more forgiving.
Even so, most of the standard turntable-transfer arm mechs can be a disaster 
if not working well.

Aireons are different and cool looking, but are notorious record eaters.
Every adjustment has to be perfect, and even then you hold your breath as it
cycles. Mine once broke every record in the machine - there are no safeties
of any kind. I learned to make only one selection at a time - that way if it
sticks, you are only out one record. Luckily, mine played good the day
someone came to look at it - he ended up buying it :).
