Doesn't the solenoid also pull the 45 spindle down, leaving
only the small diameter tip of the spindle at record height?
I seen to remember there's quite a "thwack" associated with
that action, and pushing the wire bail in the spindle with
your finger also causes the spindle to drop whether you put
pressure on the spindle itself or not.  I have a JAL-200 but 
it hasn't been fired up in 20 years.
