[Jukebox-list] AMI PUSHBUTTON QUESTION

Dan,
Thi is only a guess, since it's been years since I needed to work on one of those keyboards, and I don't have a schematic handy--
In most jukeboxes, the credit unit only serves in some way to "enable" the keybord to make a selection--sometimes supplying a "hot" and other times a "ground". I suspect that this is true on this model also. What is usually done, for free play is to "close" or "make" (contact) on a switch that is "normally open" (NO) in the credit unit and is generally called the "credit" switch. The credit switch is closed by the operation of a coin switch. In a "single price" (per each coin), unit, the credit switch is activated by the coin solenoid. In an "accumlator" type credit unit (such as I think is in that AMi), the coin switches allow a "credit wheel" to advance. This credit contact set is usually "reformed" so that it remains closed, thus supplying power to the keybord for "free play" operation, or the subtract system that returns the credit wheel to zero, is dis-abled.
Therefore, I strongly suspect that something (like a jumper--going from one section of the keyboard to the next) is broken, or one of the buttons in the first section is failing to return fully to the upright position. You should be able to check this using the schematic, and a meter.
Hope this helps, Ron Rich

As you all probably know I am a novice to the world of jukeboxes. I
am in the process of getting an AMI F-120 going. I received my
manual but am still having a couple of problems.
The credit unit seems to be operational but I do not have a slug
rejector/coin mechanism present in the machine. It seems to work on
free play , although the manual makes no mention of how to set up the
machine for free play without coins. I have an intermittent problem
where the pushbuttons work for all 120 selections....but sometimes
when I turn the machine on, only the first column (farthest left) of
push buttons will work and the remaining will not. I can not trace
the cause. I have a feeling that it has to do with the credit unit.
I realize that the wiring to the push buttons in in a series, but it
makes no sense to me why one column of buttons works and the rest
will not.
