Eliptical styli, having a thinner cross-section, are less
susceptible to the "pinch effect" which occurs with greater
intensity at the smaller diameter of a record. The inside
wall of the groove is shorter than the outside wall,
causing the waveforms of the high frequencies to be
spaced closer together on the inside wall than the outside
wall. The eliptical stylus is still the proper width
for correctly riding above the bottom of the groove, but
thinner front to back to track these "scrunched up"
undulations more accurately. This effect is one of the
problems the designers of the 45 RPM record attempted to
minimize, which is why a 45 has such a large label area
in comparison to its overal diameter.
