Wow is usually associated with the rotational speed of the
turntable (ie, a turntable would exhibit wow at a rate of
one or two undulations per revolution). Flutter exhibits a
much faster cycle time, on the order of what you'd encounter
with a lumpy diler wheel.
My machine did have a lot of both before I converted it
back to 78. The flywheel just does not have enough
momentum at the slower speed to "smooth over" the
inherent rumble in the gear set. All gear-driver
turntables exhibit rumble to a certain extent. I have
a 1940s RCA transcription turntable (similar to the one
pictured here http://www.coutant.org/rca70d/pharis.jpg )
and it is gear driven. The turntable is 18"
in diameter, weights several pounds, and it still
exhibits enough rumble that the machine is good only
for amusement purposes - you'd never dream of using
it to digitize or otherwise restore old records.
