Impedance is to an alternating current (like an audio signal)
what resistance is to a direct current - the ease with which
the current passes through a circuit. A dead short is usually
considered zero ohms impedance, and an open circuit is
infinity. An impedance mismatch can cause distortion,
especially in a low voltage circuit like the output of a
magnetic phono pickup or a microphone, because the "two halves"
of the circuit aren't loaded equally. That pretty much
depletes my knowledge on the subject - I only offer this
bonehead explanation because nobody else has replied to your
question.
