The idler wheel spring is not that strong. Never thought of that! I guess 
I'll send away for a replacement ? Don't think you can compress old one 
successfully?

I'd say get in there and get some oil on the lower bearing.  If it's gummed 
up or dry, it could be running slow.
Does the motor get hot?  If so, it needs to be cleaned out and/or 
lubricated.

Is the idler wheel spring strong?  A weak spring will cause poor turntable 
speed.
