Tom,
  In order for anyone to help you, you will need to help yourself first. You will need to start by purchasing the service manual, so that at least you can identify the components, in a common manor that we can relate to--(available at many sources including www.alwaysjukin.com )
  One thing, I hope you learned is that a "bigger fuse" is NEVER the answer. In fact, in most cases of "fuses blowing", it is usually better to decrease the fuse size, at least until the problem is corrected. In this case, once you saw the "diode smoke", it's a good bet that it's now bad, along with whatever was causing the problem in the first place.
