You are changing the final ratio, namely that between the motor
spindle and the turntable. Look at the ratio calculation!

Nope, for while you would have decreased the ratio between the idler
and the turntable, you would have increased the ratio between the
spindle and the idler by the same amount. The idler is a
"pass-through" device. Prove it to yourself by plugging
numbers into the equation I put in my other email.
