Hi Gary,

I hope the memory drum unit was not lubricated with WD-40 (or anything)! 
The pins should slide freely back and forth with just enough resistance 
to hold them in place. They should never feel sticky or sluggish. If 
someone lubricated the drum unit pins then the entire assembly must be 
taken apart, washed in Varsol, then reassembled - dry - and readjust 
centering and canceling.

As for the sound vanishing, that means the cancel circuitry is trying to 
work - your Mute Relay has kicked in.
