Probably polystyrene.  It's harder than vinyl, and the high
frequency modulations in the groove tend to get chipped off
with repeated play by anything but the gentlest cartridge
and stylus.  As I recall, they were released in the US on
the London label (British Decca) but I don't know who
their American partner was.
