[Jukebox-list] OT: The shape of the playing tip of steel needles.

Sorry, I should have explained that I only play duplicate copies on my
gramophones. The reproducer is just too heavy and will cause wear
regardless of what type of needle is used. I found permo-point needles
to be a good compromise.
Steel needles are designed to wear (instead of the record). However,
where do all the steel shards go? They get ground into the groove, and
cause more surface noise!

The problem with this is that you transfer the wearing surface from the
needle to the record. If you're playing trashed records and you don't
care if they get *more* trashed, that's fine. But the needle was
intended to be sacrificial in order to preserve the record. Unless
you're playing a record with a modern lightweight pickup, protect the
record and use a steel needle!
