And what a yard to play in!
No trip to Lizella, Georgia would be complete without stopping in at The
Jukebox Junkyard. In fact, if you're a jukebox person, and are anywhere
within 300 miles of Lizella, GA, "it's worth the trip", as Roy Dean so
succinctly put it.
Where in the world is Lizella? About 8 miles east of Macon, GA. (Macon is
about 70 miles south of Atlanta. Roy, correct me if I'm off on these
numbers, I just used my little pinkie to measure on the map.)
My wife and I drove up from Florida to this little town, just off I-75. Went
past a coupla churches, turned down a rustic dirt drive, and THERE IT WAS.
The Jukebox Junkyard. Acres. I think Roy said something like 12,000 square
feet. And believe me, there is enough jukebox-related stuff to start a
factory or two.
I still haven't been to sleep, just thinking about all of it. How can one
describe it? You want jukeboxes? Wurlitzer 800, Wurlitzer Peacock, 1015, and
many more. Seeburgs like you would not believe. AMI Continentals. RockOla
1428s. Evans, Mills, Aireon. And more. Hundreds more.
But did you say PARTS?
Holy moly. I had to clean my glasses five times to see all of it, and we
still didn't see all of it. The wife got lost in there twice, and had to
call on my cell phone to find us! Coin units, slug rejectors, trim, domes,
glass, pilasters, moldings, complete cabinets, title drums, complete
mechanisms, wallboxes, relays, solenoids, transformers, tubes, transistors,
ICs, back doors, front doors, castings, selectors, buttons, knobs, parts for
machines I never knew existed. Amplifiers, accumulators, steppers, wiring
harnesses, plugs, sockets, circuit boards. Did I mention records - you would
not believe! Hi-fi equipment, test equipment, radios, turntables, speakers
and more speakers. The end of one aisle was nearly floor-to-ceiling Seeburg
wallboxes. From a ceiling beam hung dozens of original electro-magnetic
jukebox speakers. Entire drawers of cartridges and needles.
I went with a list and we found everything I needed. His prices were good,
his knowledge and advice are priceless. I will post pictures soon!
Take Roy's (and my) advice - it's worth the trip! And bring a van or
trailer!
