We too in Canada had some 45's with a pop out centre. It could only be
removed once, and had the label printing on it. It was only a few brands
of records that had this, and it was in the mid 1970's. One record that
comes to mind is Tush by ZZ Top. If memory serves me right, it was the
London label that was doing this. Personally I always thought it was a
great idea, and wished all the manufactures had done this.
Throughout the 1980's there were some records that had a solid centre.
Mainly the Virgin label. U2 records often had the hit side at 45rpm, and
the flip side had two songs at 33rpm, with a solid centre. A good way to
confuse a jukebox.
There didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for this.

Hi, Nigel -
There's a picture of such a Capitol record on this web site:
http://members.aol.com/clctrmania/cm-adapt.html
Although I'd take what's written there with a grain of salt. He
describes the metal Webster-Chicago inserts as being liable to destroy
records when inserted or removed - that merely indicates that he, like
many others, doesn't know how to properly use them. You only have to
bend the record to a tiny degree to remove one. I have quite a few I
inherited from my dad. I keep telling people who don't like them to
send theirs to me! :-)
