I don't recall much about the older amps, but definitely the amp on the CD 
boxes will run wide open when the VC is unplugged.  You may have an open 
variable resistor on the volume control itself.

BTW, the little box on the floor that was mentioned in an earlier post is 
part of a motorized remote volume control.  RO offered a hardwired remote 
that was basically an extension of the remote inside the amp or the 
motorized version which used a N.O./Off/N.O. bat handle switch to energize 
the motors in that little can.

Do you have schematics for the amp / VC?

If not, let me know and I will see what I can dig up from the bone pile....
