Thanks Jackie. I belong to the Cdn Antique Phonograph Society, and at one of their meetings I did a presentation on how records were made. I have several stampers, mothers, acetates, blank labels, photos and other things that I kept from my first full time job. Someday I'll have to write a full article about the whole record manufacturing process.
There's a really interesting video available on e-Bay showing how 78's were made in 1942 at RCA. Many vendors are selling it, and I highly recommend it.
Jackie, keep the stories coming about your Trashcan. It's great to hear it's rebirth!
Mike

Mike,
that's interesting information about the records, vinyl vs. styrene. I love having some of the history of the jukes and record industry. Thanks, Jackie

Kyle, I can confirm that : in Canada we never had styrene records, they
were always vinyl(unless they were "oldies" imported from the USA!).
Usually the major labels CBS, WEA, EMI RCA etc pressed for the smaller
USA companies. Due to their size, they usually had state of the art
pressing plants, and fairly good quality control. Recall too that the
market in Canada is much smaller than in the USA, so the stampers were
not required to press as many copies (and therefore worn out stampers
were often not the case).
I worked at an independent record pressing company in 1979. We would get
skids back of defective records : warped, off centre, scratched,
etc.(the stores would return them for a credit). They had a machine in
which we'd put the damaged record, and it would punch out the centre
lable (whice was discarded). The remainder of the record was then ground
up, and kept in a large tub. Later when new records were being pressed,
a combination of recycled vinyl and "virgin" vinyl was used. I believe
the ratio was 50/50.
The same mix of new to old vinyl was used for what ever was being
pressed: be they 45's or LP's. The LP's got no higher quality vinyl.
Back to styrene records: just listening to the people on this site, its
obvious that most of us know of the very poor quality of this material.
I'd rather pay a few pennies more for a better pressing made of vinyl,
but unfortunately the manufacturers seem intent on making them as
cheaply as possible today.

"Heart of Glass" did see USA vinyl release, and you're right, the
plastic copies are always bad. I had a minty one that after 3 plays on
my good equipment had audible noise. I think it was originally cut
improperly.
Thought I was the only one to ever notice!
If you like vinyl titles from this era, search Canadian eBay. Pretty
much all of their 45 records were vinyl.

Sorry. He's auctioned off records before but never do I remember him
listing 200 batches at once.I have to limit myself on what I bid on and
if they go too high I won't bother to snipe them.I like getting records
cheap myself. After all these are used records he's selling. The vinyl
ones will be ok but I'm kinda worried about the styrene ones having done
jukebox duty and getting played to death.I'm watching the Blondie ones
but I really don't know what playing condition they are in.I've never
found a playable used copy of "Rapture" and "Heart of Glass" is usually
noisy. I wonder if "Rapture"is available on a new vinyl oldies 45.
Maybe Ron is better off buying the one record new. I think the label
ELO one used styrene.
