Not a stupid question, because it's hard to tell. If you put
model glue on it, and it melts, it's polystyrene. :-)

Seriously, there are a couple ways of telling, and it helps
to have known records of both types handy as "control samples."
Generally, a styrene record will "feel harder" and a vinyl
record will "feel softer". Yeah, that's pretty subjective.
The outer edge of the styrene record will be sharper, and
it will be less flexible. I find the best test is how it
"rings." If you hold the record by the lead-in groove area
between your thumb and forefinger, and tap the opposite
edge with your finger nail, the styrene record will ring
brighter, at a higher frequency than the vinyl record,
which by comparison will emit more of a "thud" or "thump"
type sound. Maybe Kyle has more or better methods since
he seems to be the one who's done the most research.
