I hope you guys are talking about steel needles in a lightweight
crystal or ceramic cartridge, not an accoustic soundbox or
horseshoe magnet pickup.  With those you can get by by turning
the needle 180 degees after the first play then discarding it
after the second play, but that's as far as you can stretch it
without doing serious damage to the record.  The needle tip
develops shoulders and starts to ride on the flat area between
grooves, while the tip, now too small to ride on the groove
walls, crashes from side to side of the groove.
