I don't know about those old 78 mechs but I clean Seeburg 45 mechs with
cleaner and water. The motor and any solenoids must be either removed or protected
in plastic bags.I remove them but then I don't mind marking, unsoldering and
soldering wires back after I'm done .My favorite is "Dow Scrubbing Bubbles"
bathroom cleaner. It gets Seeburg 45 mechs clean as new.
Be very careful with it around painted areas and the Seeburg metal labels
though. It will attack the ink on Seeburg metal plates and on certain other
things. I found if you get it on and off very quickly it won't hurt baseplate and
record rack paint.
I don't know about the paint on your Trashcan mech though.I clean it as well
as possible with degreasers and "weaker " cleaners and the final with the
Dow.Seems nothing gets it as clean.Anything missed can be hit with a shot of brake
cleaner.Be careful around the same certain things as the Dow.
Then you need to get it dry and lubricated. If it's a hot day the sun will
do.If not a hair dryer and towells works in the house. Then everything that needs
it must get relubricated as you have washed it off.
Most of what I have said is in Ron Rich's book but of course you have a
different mechanism there.
p.s. After all these years I have my C mech mostly together and super clean.I
got plenty of practice on lesser jukes before I tackled the C.I actually made
a little plastic cover for the identification plate on the C and siliconed it
over the ident. plate so I could clean to my heart's delight with the
bathroom cleaner without worry of damaging it.I still dissassembled it totally as I
cleaned and replaced any rusty screws and mech parts with very clean ones
from donor mechs. Most of the cast parts don't rust luckily like the cam, clutch
tower and most of it's parts, record lift arm, etc.I think all the grease on it
helped protect it in some aspects from the barn environment and mice. Now if
only the weather would cooperate so I can finish the mechanism. The humidity has
been much too high for repainting the tonearm, record stripper, clamp arm, record
rack, covers and base for the last week and it's just been downright hot.
