Christmas certainly provides a fertile ground for programming
a jukebox. My G-200, which comes out into the yard for my
annual Christmas party, usually has 20 Christmas records and
80 non-Christmas ones. Any more than that and you start
cutting into the "meat" of the non-seasonal programming. My
M100-A in the house usually features a higher percentage
of holiday records, maybe 15 of the 50 total. I remember when
I found my first pop Christmas 78 - "Rudolph the Red Nosed
Reindeer" at the Goodwill. Before that all I had was a fairly
boring Columbia set from the late 30s of real carols sung by the
BBC Chorus. I still use "Good King Wenceslas" from that group,
but I now have several Gene Autry hits, everything from "Sleigh
Ride" by the Boston Pops to "Santa Baby" by Eartha Kitt; and last
year I added "The Man with the Bag" by Kay Starr, a very "hep"
lounge kind of Christmas song. I once had "Jingle Bell Rock"
on 78, and lost it by the next year. It's been four years now
and I don't have a clue where it went. Anyway, I'd be happy
to provide a list of what I've found over the years if anyone
is looking for Christmas 78s to keep an eye out for.
