steve, you hit it on the head; that's what i was trying to get across to dave. missing the bass in the early records doesn't bother the overall song, although some early 45s (RandB) really have some low end. since chad has an identical set up juke/cart/records which sounds good to his ears, the only variable is the amp, not the cart/needles. something is not right and he is losing fidelity. justin

Out of phase bass -- even if propperly picked up by a stereo pickup
and played back through stereo speakers -- will cancel "in the air"
and sound really bad.
 
Unless this is just one record being used to test the system, I think
you're probably barking up the wrong tree for this problem.
 
I think the original poster was stating something more like the early
records just didn't use a lot of bass energy, so they don't sound bad
without it (I'm thinking of some of the Bing Crosby stuff I inherited
from my grandparents here).  Later records get more bass heavy and
really don't sound right without it.
