Your 1438 has the "hurky-jerky" gripper syndrom. Take the three bolts out of the gripper motor and remove the motor. Turn the large gripper cogwheel by hand through a complete gripper cycle, pickup record, set it down on turntable and back. You'll feel any rough spots. Lube the gripper mech and try again.
THEN, remount the motor... IMPORTANT, before tightening up the bolt head screws, be sure the motor cogwheel is fairly tightly meshed against the gripper cogwheel. Be sure it's not cocked and binding. There is enough play in the motor mount to insure this motor cog is properly aligned with the gripper cog!! This was the problem with my 1438 when I initially re-installed a new gripper motor... I got the "hurky-jerky" gripper arm until I got the cogs correctly aligned...
