Well, as far as genuine JAN-numbered tubes (American-made or possibly
foreign-made-but-registered-with-the-EIA...), the only suffixes I am
aware of are W and A. The A suffix is a reduced-hum version for audio
use (which you don't need for this application, since it's not in the
audio path), and the W means a ruggedized military-spec version, which
is also nothing you need to pay extra for in this application. Now, if
you get into the current-production Chinese or Russian tubes, they go
their own way as far as what their numbering and lettering means...
But really, you should probably just replace the cap(s) and resistors
in the pulse amplifier first, which would be much cheaper than buying
a new 12AX7, and see if that cures your problem (unless you have already
tested the tube in a tube-tester...)
