John,
I can 'splain that as it was 'splained to me---
Seeburg was unsure that "100" selections would be a hit with the operator. They never wanted the operator to see the fact that only about 10-20 % of the records, made up 99% of play (as they found out in pre-release testing). It turned out that the "locations" forced the 100 play sales, not the operator. I was told that the original design of the "A" had the pop meter, but it was eliminated in production. I was not aware that the play counter was an "option", as every "A" keyboard I have seen has one (or what's left of one). Where did you se that listed as an option?

I find it interesting that the Seeburg M100A was
designed without a popularity meter! This must be the
only "modern" jukebox that had none. My question is
why? How did the routeman know which records were
making money and which ones to take out?
Also of interest, is that it didn't come with a play
counter either, it was however available as an OPTION!
So the collector never knew if his machine was being
played honestly, or even how many plays it really made
other than counting the cashbox!
I can't imagine why they left off these two features
when earlier and all later machines had them. I would
think they are pretty important!
