I think it was William's machine, and I think the problem
was related to the cam not rotating far enough before the
machine went back ionto scan mode. The arm is pushed down
by the cam, against spring tension that makes it rise as
the cam's rotation allows, so that if it binds on the rack
it will just hang there until the cam pushes it back
down. If the clutch moves too soon, the cam hasn't
finished pushing it all the way down when the mechanism
goes back into scan mode. Either that, or *my* feeble
memory is messed up too. I have two versions of the
manual and neither is very forthcoming on the lift arm
details.
