Thanks Graeme and Doug,
Mine was 785mm at the top and 778mm at the bottom! It's smaller now - thanks 
to a large sash clamp!

Graeme - I found the assembly sequence you describe by trial and error (lots 
of the latter!) Nice to know I got the right answer in the end.

G'day Adrian,
Doug is correct the measurement is 771 mm.     I have several Continentals
the 1 & 2 are the same.  I have restored several.     You have the put the
lighting harness with plugs  in place first. (the rest of the  lights are
plugged in last)      Then the title holders with light holders.   Then the
bottom there are two tapered head screws in each bottom corner you put a
screwdriver through the bottom of the light frame.     Then the top.
Sounds easy but  it can be frustrating.     You can contact me off list if
