Jackie, you can see the motor for the door animation unit from the back
side of the door, it is directly below the speaker.  The animation unit
under the dome is indeed missing.

And that red plastic has deformed simply from age, I doubt any lamp
heat was involved except early on.  No one would leave the lamps going
when the plastic got that curly.  I have a 1950 pinball that had 
curling plastics, they proceded to get more and more distorted even
during the couple of decades when the machine was never plugged in.
