David,
Welcome !
What you are hearing is the Automatic Volume Compensator (or Control) (AVC) doing it's job. There are a couple of things that affect it, that you might just want to "tinker " with.
Do you have the Service Manual? If so, check the needle set-down adjustment. Also, there maybe a switch on the AVC unit that allows for more or less of a time adjustment--I'm not sure if that model had such a switch or not. The other thing you can do is ( I think- on that model), eliminate the AVC section alltogether. I believe that it was still an option on the Conti 2's.

Hello everyone and here is my first post in the group, tentatively done, as
I do not want to be repeating what has already been asked elsewhere!
I have an AMI Cont 2 which plays/sounds great but an annoying problem is, at
the start of each single played, just after the tone arm has been dropped,
and for the first 10/15 secs of each record...not just while the box is
warming up... the volume starts off very quietly and then build up to the
"set" volume.
Is this normal with these boxes or is there something that needs
adjusting/replacing?
Regards all
David
