I'd beg to differ with that.

The C-9 bulbs were called C-9 because they have a candelabra
base and consumed 9 watts. Modern ones consume closer to 7
watts, so a typical 25-light string will consume 175 watts.
I connect 5 strings together on my house and a 1 amp switch
handles them just fine. C-7 bulbs, likewise, were 7 watts,
but modern ones consume closer to 5.

The little screw-base miniature lamps that I referred
to earlier, decorated my mother's 1950s era tabletop tree
that always sat on the piano in my parents' living room.
It now sits on the same piano in my house every Christmas.
I put it on a Variac and cut the voltage down to a pleasant
~80V glow. That combined with the 20-30 NOS replacement
bulbs I have lead me to believe it will be enjoyed by several
generations yet to come. I always use C7 bulbs on my
tree, and in recent years I've beed hoarding C7 twinkle
bulbs because they are getting hard to find and I can't
imagine Christmas without them.
