Remove your turntable platter and take a look underneath. Rock-ola used a
simple mechanical system to change speeds. The turntable motor shaft has two
different diameters at the very top. When a 33 1/3 record is played, the
idler wheel engages the small diameter on the shaft, playing at a slower
speed. This assembly will get sticky, or many have been disabled over the
years (most people don't play the 33's). Your turntable motor may have been
replaced at one time with a regular 45 rpm motor, so check the shaft. While
you are in there, check the motor grommets - many have become crumbly/rotten
over the years. This allows the motor to sag, and your 45 records will be
played at 33 1/3 rpm. Let us know what you find.
