Ron, I agree with you: 51-1 is for microgroove, 51-2 is good for repro
78's and some 1950's 78's. 51-3 is best for original 78's (shellac). I
know that Victory is still selling the 3 mil stylus.
I found a big improvement in sound quality when I switched from the 2
mil to 3 mil stylus for original 78's. The sound was fuller, and louder,
and there was no "drifting" of the sound as when a 2 mil stylus was used
(I assume the 2 mil was not making full contact with both sides of the
groove).
For repro 78's only, I'd stick with the 2 mil.
Mike

Mike,
I can't help with colors--not a cosmetic guy-- But on the cart. All "51"
carts are exactly the same. The "dash number" is the needle size, either
a "1 mill, 2 mill", or "3 mill". The last time I looked, you could still
buy all three needles, themselves.
As I understand it (which may not be correct), pre WWII record grooves
were 3 mill size, post war, were 2 mill, and repro's are 1 mill.
Hope that's right, if not, someone will "chime in"--Ron Rich

Hi everyone,
I'm working on a Rockola 1428 and I have a few questions:
1. I'd like to redo the glitter on the "bursts" on the backdrop behind
the record stack and the turntable. It's so black that I can't even
tell what color or colors it is supposed to be. Does anyone know - if
so, could you please list the colors looking at the jukebox, going from
left to right? Also, it looks like there are some small round circles
that had glitter too? Does anyone have any ideas for the best way to
take this backdrop off to redo it?
2. I've seen some pictures of 1428's where the cap on the record tray
stack is a shiny green color. Mine is a matte black. Is this some sort
of a piece that attaches to the top, or is is just glossy green paint?
Does any one know how it was originally done?
3. Right now it has a 51-2 and is playing original 78's. I've heard
some say a 51-1 is better for repro 78's, which I may get sometime.
Just wondering what folks on this board think is better for repro 78's -
can I keep the 51-2 for them?
Thanks in advance for any advice, and I know I will have more questions
as I slowly work on this jukebox. This list looks like a great resource
for help! - Mike
