I thought it was 3 mil for original 78s with 2 mil being a compromise 
between 3 mil for 78s and 1 mil for mono 45s.  The compromise was for 
use when using the same needle to play 3 mil cut records and 1 mil cut 
records.  I think there used to be a 2 mil cobra for use in the 
Wurlitzers with the Wurlimagic brain where you could mix 78s and 45s in 
the same box.
