I thought it was 3 mil for original 78s with 2 mil being a compromise
between 3 mil for 78s and 1 mil for mono 45s. The compromise was for
use when using the same needle to play 3 mil cut records and 1 mil cut
records. I think there used to be a 2 mil cobra for use in the
Wurlitzers with the Wurlimagic brain where you could mix 78s and 45s in
the same box.

OK, so here is my take on this one. I had extensive conversations on this
subject with a Pickering rep years ago and also with a guy who produced the
repro record sets. Original 78¹s are best used with the 3 mil needle. The
repro 78¹s are best used with the 2 mil needle. The 1 mil will ride in the
base of the groove and play all the dirt and the hiss. Clearly you do not
want to use a 1 mil needle on any 78. The 1 mil was for indeed intended for
the pre-stereo 45¹s. Pickering used to produce a truncated 2.7 mil stylus
for older 78s that did not pick up the information off the bottom of the
groove.

I purchased a 1015 with a pickering cartridge that had a 3 mil needle. The
repro record set wore prematurely and the stylus looked like it had a shelf
to it it was worn down to the Shape of the 2 mil groove.
