Thanks for the response and the info.... I think I'd rather leave the
current patina on the plastics - it's a natural part of the aging
process (kinda like our patina changes as we get older !!!). 

So, a good cleaning is in order.  I'm just afraid of how some of the
modern cleaning chemicals might react with the 40's era plastics.
What would you recommend?

Dan,

What is your target color for the yellow plastics? They came from the
factory eggshell white. You can bring them back to that color with a
lot of elbow grease. Some people don't like to do this because they
feel they have been stripped of their patina. The catalins do yellow
back over in time. 
Nothing  will stop this and any clearcoat will make a repolishing very
very difficult. Let me know if you want to bring them to eggshell
white. I just did a Wurl 700 this way.
