Ed, yes, that's exactly what I wanted to do!!!

My R was the victim of a latch coil fire, and part of the damage was the blue grille diffuser being melted. I replaced it with clear plastic, and used colour strips from a 1015 to have the "waterfall" crome illuminated. Looks pretty good, but I had thought animation would be better. 

Not sure if my memory is correct, but didn't they add colour to the grille of the following model, the "J"?  Why is it ok there, but not in the "R"? 

I can't understand what the big fuss is about this discussion (you'd think I was planning on cutting the machine in half!). An animation unit is one small part that is in keeping with a 1950's theme (and could later be removed if needed). I've seen "R"'s painted pink, and bright orange, at least I'm not going to that extreme! Mine's totally stock except for the added colour. 

Well, that's my 2 cents worth.

I have seen animation units on a R, surrounding the light tube below the title strips.  It changes the colors on the strips, doesn't do much with the grill, unless, gasp, you remove the blue plastic.  I like to put colored lights in the G, and W, but the R is very special as is, I won't mess with the original!  My 2Cents worth....

 I have never seen one on a "R".  Seeing as there is room for just one lamp on hat model, what do you want to "annimate"? The mech compartment, and  the grill rea, would almost be impossible to seperate ( and in my opinion, annimation ould ruin the concept of the design).
